Abstract
Among the four major processes in automobile manufacturing, painting involves numerous and complex procedures and process parameters, demanding a high degree of automation and control standards. Troubleshooting and resolving issues during the painting process is relatively difficult and can significantly impact the production system. Typically, painting plant construction requires substantial investment and a long lead time. Post-commissioning operation and management are more challenging than the other three major processes, but the production flexibility is relatively better. When the differences in vehicle size, weight, painting area, and coating standards are small, the quality, cost, and efficiency of painting are basically unaffected by production flexibility. If the differences in vehicle size, weight, painting area, and coating standards are large, achieving flexible painting requires accepting losses in terms of cost, efficiency, or even quality. It is evident that painting is a crucial process in traditional automobile manufacturing's four major processes. Although it offers certain advantages in flexible production, ensuring quality and efficiency becomes difficult when significant changes occur in certain necessary prerequisites. The rise of a new round of industrial revolution globally is driving changes in the industrial structure and business models of automobile manufacturing across the entire lifecycle, from product design, production, and use to service. The automotive painting industry faces numerous new challenges. How to meet these new challenges and adapt to new demands will become paramount.
